I just found a reference in our paper to the fact that the Colonial Americans called November's full moon the "Beaver Moon". The name signified the time to set (beaver) traps before the swamps froze. The Farmers Almanac reports the name's origin as simply referring to the time of year when beavers are preparing for winter.
