he he... that's exactly the same as my first driving lesson (except my guy was a chain smoker too)... after nearly 20 years driving experience i was a gibbering wreck after an hour in the car with him... my guy stopped me in the middle of the road once (with oncoming traffic bearing down on us) to point out something i'd apparently done wrong.. and yeah, check the mirrors BEFORE putting on the seatbelt is apparently big here... i got into trouble for that too..

D.S., thankfully, this was the only lesson I had with this bloke. In the end, I aced the final exam and got my Spanish driving license. I lived and drove in the UK for two years, and you guys drive way better than the Spanish, despite being on the wrong side of the road. Thanks for commenting.

A good, humerous article. Being a driving instructor in the UK I can see where the instructor is coming from, especially the clutch down around corners (coasting), as you will not have the same control over the car, but he does seem a bit, errrr, nervous! He may be in the wrong job!

If you decide to by-pass driving school will you be tested with prejudice as you were on the written portion?

That's not even an option with the driving part of the exam. You have to be given the exam in a vehicle outfitted with dual pedals, and unless you want to build one yourself, you have to use those owned by a driving school. And no driving school or instructor will give you an exam without you having at least one class under your belt.

Sigh...

If you decide to by-pass driving school will you be tested with prejudice as you were on the written portion? Who actually administers the test? I'm guessing it may have to be done at a driving school. Sheesh, what a racket. I don't blame you for being annoyed and nervous. Having someone else as a co-pilot with nearly full capabilities would irk anyone. Apparently you have to play the game to get the license though. Good luck.
