A friend’s husband’s blog pointed me to this, and I feel the need to propagate the meme since it made me laugh so hard. If you’ve eaten recently, wait a little before clicking on this link:

Steve, Don’t Eat It! Vol. 7: Cuitlacoche

Cuitlacoche is a black fungus that infects corn fields, making the kernels bulbous and swollen as they fill with spores. It also goes by the name Huitlacoche. If you’re having trouble with the pronounciation, it’s: Cuitlacoche (kweet-lah-KOH-chay) or Huitlacoche (dat-sfuckin-NAS-tee).

Thanks for that. Reading about unspeakably disgusting food has a certain fascination for me. Have you heard of Japanese “natto”? Anthony Bourdain describes trying and failing to eat it in his book “A Cook’s Tour”.

No, but I just went to the Wikipedia page, and I’m feeling a little nauseous.

I’m making tacos tonight. I looked for Cuitlacoche in the South American section of the grocery store - I thought it might spice up m tacos - but I couldn’t find any. Probably just as well.
