One of the first thing most visitors to our humble home say is, “So you guys got something against lamp shades, or what?” Our house still has the original light bulbs hanging from wires popping out of holes in the ceiling that the original builder left. And all the previous owners have shared our apathy about remedying the situation.

Naked Bulb

Lit from my desk lamp.

By the way, if you want to get a lot of hits on an image you post to Flickr, try tagging it with naked, bikini, striptease or nude. The freaks come right out of the woodwork.

I thought that this post was going to include a proud display of the new lamp shade. Oh well.

  2. Erik R. SPAIN:

Watch out, IKEA! The new minimalist bare-bulb style is about to sweep the world any minute now!

Speaking of ways to ensure hits, one of my most popular blogposts in terms of random hits from strangers is Four naked men in a room.
    No idea why…

  4. Erik R. SPAIN:

Simon, it’s all about search engine indexable content and what people search for. That post contains “naked men”, “mud”, “oil”, “rub”, “bodies”, “steam”, “woman”, and a photo of a naked woman! That’s exactly the kind of thing that will lead people to you.

Of course I’ve hugely increased the popularity of this very post by leaving this comment.

  5. Theresa SPAIN:

We’ve lived in our house for over 8 years now, and we still have a few naked bulbs around (in the bathrooms and the hall). I’m guessing that 8 years from now the problem should be remedied.

  6. Erik R. SPAIN:

See, Mom? Everybody’s doing it! :-)

  7. simon LUXEMBOURG:

Thanks. I was actually being sarcastic, but never mind.
I also mysteriously get lot of hits whenever I mention the phrase “food porn”.

  8. Erik R. SPAIN:

Speaking of food porn, stay tuned for next post…

I am disappointed in the lack of information about the pluses and minuses of shades. Here we are very happy screwing bulbs into ceramic sockets. We have not had any lamp shades, window shades, curtains, or neighbors for 25 years.

  10. Erik R. SPAIN:

No curtains here either. We’re very utilitarian about our home decorating. I appreciate things like curtains and lamp shades when I see them, but when I don’t see them, I don’t feel like anything’s really lacking.
