Daylight Savings Time

Europe, and the rest of the non-US world that likes taking an hour of sleep from its citizens every spring, changed over to daylight savings time this weekend. They had a special report about it on the mid-day Saturday news. The reporter was interviewing a nerdy-looking fellow who was sitting at a huge [...]

Arcturus Rising

Ever since discovering, recently, that my new DSLR camera can pick up star light, I’ve been waiting impatiently for a clear night to do a timelapse video. The sky was blue all afternoon yesterday, and was relatively clear when the sun set, so I got excited that I’d finally have a chance. Unfortunately, [...]

Orange Flowers, Green Bicycle

Walking around town the other day, I snapped two photos that screamed out at me to be played with in Photoshop. The first were some bright orange flowers that were a little beaten up by the recent heavy rains, but still standing proud, reflecting orange light. The second is a bicycle that an [...]

Blog Whoring

I’m always fascinated by the new and creative ways that people think up to make money on the internet. A week or two ago, I found myself looking for ways to better my PageRank. For those of you who don’t know, PageRank is a number from 0 to 9 assigned by Google to [...]

Lottery Year - First Quarter Results

Well, we’ve made it through the first quarter of 2008. So far, I have kept to my plan to play 5€ in the ONCE lottery every Friday. Statistically, I would expect to lose that 5€ on 18 of the first 20 weeks. Since, as every card player knows, there are 13 weeks [...]

The Rasmussen Family Vault

Last September, a distant cousin of mine, Mark, found my blog and left a comment explaining who he was. Mark’s mother and my grandfather were cousins, both the grandchildren of Rasmus Rasmussen, a sailor, author and Lutheran reverend that sailed from Norway to the United States on a viking ship for the 1893 Chicago [...]

Unfortunate Rhyme

During my investigations into poems, prayers, or dances that could be done to make this stop this seemingly eternal rain, I discovered the reason for all this watery misery. It turns out that everybody else in the world is sending their rain over here to get rid of it! That hardly seems fair. [...]

Absentee Primary Ballot

My absentee ballot for the May 6, 2008, North Carolina Democratic Primary arrived finally. Like a good voter, I spent a couple hours putting each candidate’s name into Google and learning about their opinions on various issues. Some of them, like the humorously named Duskin Lassiter, lost my vote for simple reasons of [...]

Disaster

Two disasters befell me yesterday. Both times, I was saved by the foresight of my friends. The largest disaster, by far, was that I accidentally deleted my entire blog database. All those 198,919 words in 522 posts, and 93,656 words in 1,730 comments, everything was gone! I had no backups!
