I heard the music from Fractured Fairy Tales playing in the background the whole time I was reading the wine part.

In the small town bars in Extremadura, when you order a glass of wine, they serve you from a DYC whiskey bottle, never trying to hide the fact that they buy in bulk.

I believe that the "bag in a cardboard box" will soon become the standard for buying unbottled wine. The winery in the photos has already switched to boxes. It's the most efficient volume usage (a 5L cube is really pretty small: 6.7"3), stackable, and come with a handle and serving spigot. Ideal.

By the time we left Slovenia we had a 'go-to' winery that we would visit every couple of months to lay in some bottled wine in cases, but before we found that place I used to have Sunday afternoon wine-hunts similar to the one you describe. There is something immensely satisfying about buying wine by the five-liter jerrycan.
