Scorpion Moon

Last night, I took a timelapse video of the waning gibbous moon rising in the night sky using my usual method. Unfortunately the focus was a little off. Apparently “infinity” focus was inappropriate.
The moon was accompanied on its celestial journey last night by Antares, the 16th brightest star in the night sky, only [...]

Too much Phun

It might not be possible to have too much fun, but it’s definitely possible to have to much Phun. Phun is a “2D physics sandbox”. What that means is that it allows you to draw shapes (circles, squares, or arbitrary freehand shapes) and then lets you bang them together using simulated physics laws. [...]

Crookes Radiometer

A few Christmases ago, my parents gave me a Crookes radiometer. Although I did not know the official name of the device, I had first learned about them watching Mr. Wizard, and had later seen some in science classrooms during my jaunt through the public school system. The explanation I was always given [...]

Fluffy Water

Occasionally the sky does something that makes me run to get my camera. I took the last two yesterday morning. Yesterday I had to get up at sunrise to go to the doctor to have some blood taken for analysis. Not because I’m ill, but because I’m healthy. It’s been almost [...]

Dizzying Night Sky

Recently, I made another attempt at a timelapse video of the stars. The night was a lot clearer, but, unfortunately, it was both too cold and too unpredictable to leave the window open all night, so the light from the street lamps hitting the wall caused significant glare in the image.

Alexander’s Band (Again)

Last Thursday was a pretty sunny day. But, within an hour of shooting this video, as the sun went down, it began to rain. When I went to the window to see the storm, I saw another Alexander’s Band, just like two years ago. With the setting sun low in the sky [...]

Arcturus Rising

Ever since discovering, recently, that my new DSLR camera can pick up star light, I’ve been waiting impatiently for a clear night to do a timelapse video. The sky was blue all afternoon yesterday, and was relatively clear when the sun set, so I got excited that I’d finally have a chance. Unfortunately, [...]

Distance to the Horizon

A couple years ago, a friend and I, while staying at a beachside condo, were standing on the balcony staring at the flat, distant horizon, and we got to wondering, “I wonder how far we can see right now?” and “I wonder how much further we can see up here on the 9th floor than [...]

Spanish Skies

These are some photos of the sky that I’ve taken lately. The first one is from January 31, and the last one is from this morning.
Enjoy.
